Casa Batllo,

Day 6: Monday 27th of July caught the tram and metro to Passeig de Gracia metro station and queued up for
20 minutes to go to the Casa Batllo - a house Gaudi designed for a Barcelona merchant. It cost 16.50 euro
for one person but it was money well spent. The house although designed in the 19th century,
was well ahead of its time in terms of the technology and design Gaudi used to build the house.
The house has 6 levels. The outside façade of the building has colorful mosaic tiles plastered over
the front of the building. The pillars of the windows look and are shaped like human bones.
The balconies are the most special because they are shaped like a human shell.
The banisters look like scrunched up leaves and they prominently jut out.
The roof of the house looks like the scales of a dragon and
the chimneys sticking out of the roof are like the claws of a dragon.

The house had huge big windows, designed in typical Gaudi style; there was stained glass windows over
the doors that changed colour from room to room. The doors were also typical of Gaudi, curved lines
reflecting nature and its shapes. The fireplace was shaped like a mushroom and the curves and shape of
it made it very special. There were two seats also set into the fireplace area. The ceilings had curvy lines
that also reflected the many shapes of nature. There were doomed ceilings, ceilings that had swirling
shapes etched into them and beautiful chandeliers hanging from them. The staircases were built of thick
curvy oak and they had oak sea shell shaped skirting lined along the bottom of the staircase.
They all curved upwards to each floor. There was an atrium built into the middle of the house to give
natural light to all the rooms. The walls of the atrium were plastered with blue mosaic tiles to give a water
like effect when you looked into it through the wavy glass on each floor. When we traveled down
the elevator this effect was clearly seen. At the back of the house there was a garden and to enter the
garden you had to walk past two pillars decorated with mosaic tiles. Out in the garden there were
also mosaic tiles plastered around the walls and the floor.
After this we went for lunch and then we went to Casa Mila La Pedrera. Here the queue was 45 minutes.
It cost 10 euro for one person. This building wasn’t as spectacular as the Casa Batllo but it still reflected
the Gaudi style both inside and outside. The building was bigger and it held apartments.
We saw a typical apartment of the time, a sitting room, bedrooms, kitchen, sewing room and bathroom.
The most spectacular part of the building was the roof and loft area. There was a museum of sorts
in the loft and you could see all of Gaudi’s buildings in model form. The roof looked like a chess
board with the pieces been the chimneys. The balconies looked like scrunched up leaves.

Picasso
Then we walked back to Placa Catalunya. Along the way we walked into the Burberry shop
and bought two Burberry trench coats that were on sale for 120 and 187 euro. A good buy!
We then went to find the Picasso Museum and the we walked back to La Rambla
and looked at the souvenir shops and had dinner. We caught the metro and tram back to the hotel.
While we were travelling back to the hotel people were asking us where the Burberry shop was
and even the children knew the Burberry logo. We got home at 10.30 because there was
a Barcelona FC match on and the metro and the tram were loaded with people.
It was a tiring but good day because of the cheap shopping at the Burberry shop.
